In the anticipation of events, anticipation of growth into a new roll or experience, we phantasize what this will look like. When the reality arrives we are sometimes hit with a less-than-ideal version of our phantasy. That period of adjustment to the real can evoke powerful, contradictory, even violent emotions, that need to be metabolized. We are left with shards of the phantasized and grasp at means of consoling ourselves … as we live in the real world of less than ideal.
