CIPS NewsBriefs - Winter 2023

Letter from the Editor

Dear CIPS Colleagues:

The theme for this issue is “Finding Community in Turbulent Times.”

As with past issues, this one will include updates about some of our members. These have been submitted by the CIPS reporters, whom I’d like to thank: Drew Tillotson, Susan Mitchell, Beth Siegel, and Dave Parnes. For future issues, I’ll be looking for reporters from institutes, societies, and study groups in CIPS that we don’t currently have a reporter for. If that sounds like you—please let me know! This issue also contains an in memoriam section, to further honor those who touched our lives and are no longer here with us.

We are fortunate to have three creative submissions for this issue. Meredith Redding, MA, LMFT has shared a piece entitled “Mothers For Mothers”. Elizabeth (Betsy) Kassoff, PhD has shared a poem entitled “Pandemic Respite”. And finally, I have submitted a brief poem entitled “Fiber Optic Reverie,” which I was inspired to share again after reading Meredith and Betsy’s pieces for this issue. I was very moved by their submissions, and highly recommend reading them.

On the subject of community, I’d like to give thanks to Fountain House, based in New York City. They have generously given their time, resources, creativity, and heart to CIPS as we seek to expand and refine our shared mission and values. I’d also like to thank our graphic designer Mafe Izaguirre, who brings this publication to life through her visual artistry.

Winnicott said that one cannot speak of a baby without also speaking of a mother. In a similar spirit, I believe that one cannot speak of a psychoanalyst without also speaking of a community. I’ll conclude with a hope that we can keep finding each other, both through turbulent and peaceful times.

Yours truly,
