This clinically-oriented workshop will offer a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective on male gender that replaces outdated aspects of binary reasoning with a view of male identity as an ongoing dynamic process that incorporates rather than rejects what tends to be regarded as “feminine.” Drawing upon Michael Diamond’s recently published book by Routledge, Masculinity and Its Discontents: The Male Psyche and the Inherent Tensions of Maturing Manhood, we will offer ways of understanding male patients and their efforts both to navigate their primordial vulnerability and the tenuous nature of masculinity throughout the complex, lifelong developmental struggle that men must undergo to build their identities.

Utilizing several clinical examples along with Jane Campion’s brilliant cinematic examination of masculinity in The Power of the Dog, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and other mental health practitioners can further their clinical understanding and technical repertoire. The so-called “male ego,” the “feminine” within the “masculine,” and the more adaptive as well as rigidly phallic and oftentimes “toxic” forms of masculinity are addressed in the context of psychodynamic and sociocultural aspects of gender roles, as well as the changing social definition of masculinity and the attenuation of the gender binary.

Participants will have an opportunity to question the presenters and clarify the ideas throughout the session.

Please note that viewing The Power of the Dog prior to the course is strongly recommended (it is available for viewing on Netflix as well as in movie theaters nationwide).
