Reanalysis: Between Beginning and Termination by Monica Vorchheimer

Much has been written since Freud about initiating analysis. There is, however, a dearth of literature addressing an analysis that is not the first one. Is there anything special about this second or “reanalysis?” Sometimes reanalysis gives access to a psychopathology of the previous therapeutic process. And what about a reanalysis initiated after having been trained as a psychoanalyst?

A clinical case will be presented to discuss what Argentine psychoanalysts Puget and Wender have described as the perpetuation of analysis. They discuss eternalization of analysis as a field problem, a collusion between analyst and patient held by an unconscious shared phantasy – a disturbance in the transferential-countertransferential realm. This needs to be differentiated from what Freud described as “interminable analysis.”

Reanalysis can be a healing process from the transferential-countertransferential neurosis, perversion or even psychosis (folie a deux). The important question is whether there exists an actual desire of analysis or whether we are facing a case of ritualization of psychoanalysis.

The case presentation, specifically a consultation for reanalysis, will address these topics and allow for a stimulating discussion of analytic endings and new beginnings.

Monica Vorchheimer is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytical Association (APdeBA). She has a private practice in Psychoanalysis with adolescents, adults, families, and couples in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She teaches and lectures locally and abroad in several countries. She was the Latin America Co-Chair of ING, the International New Groups Committee and past Co-Chair for Latin America at the IPA Committee on Psychoanalysis with Couples and Families (COFAP. Currently she serves on the IPA Board as a Latin America Representative.

She has published articles and chapters in books, and co-edited with David Scharff Clinical Dialogues on Families and Couples (Karnac, 2017).
