Videoconference: Complex Issues of Divorce from a Psychoanalytic Perspective
Dates: Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, 2020
Time: 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm (EDT); 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm (PDT)
Steven Demby, PhD
COURSE DESCRIPTION: In the first part of this three-part seminar, we will use a psychoanalytic perspective to understand the distortions in the parent-parent and parent-child relationships that evolve in the context of a high conflict, litigated child custody case. In the second part, we will explore the unconscious motivations shaping the divorce of Nicole and Charlie, the protagonists in the contemporary movie, “Marriage Story.” In the third part, using clinical material from adult cases, we will explore divorce-related challenges in the psychoanalytic treatment of adults going through divorce.
