Videoconference: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Couples Therapy and Sexual Therapy – Linda Sobelman

Dates: Thursdays: October 8, 15, 22, 29, 2020
Time: 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm (EDT); 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm (PDT)

Linda Sobelman, PhD, FIPA

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this seminar we will examine the contributions of psychoanalytic thinking to the practice of conjoint treatment and sexual therapy. We will begin with the concepts of projective identification and unconscious object choice which provide a bridge from the intrapsychic world to the interpersonal stage of marital interactions. The defense mechanism of splitting (a necessary precondition for projective identification) will be discussed, the meaning and consequences of defensive splitting explored, and treatment approaches suggested.
