ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action is an award-winning interdisciplinary magazine conceived as an agent of community building and transformation. Room embodies a psychoanalytic and poetic understanding of how change happens and has become a powerful tool for personal, cultural, and political discourse. Positioned at the interface between the public and private spheres, Room mirrors a changing socio-political reality. We encourage emerging voices along with more established voices to be heard together in this new creative context. Room’s production process parallels the psychoanalytic technique of free association: we don’t plan themes for the magazine and we never know where the community’s submissions will take us next. Each iteration of Room affectively and intellectually archives a moment in time. 

The magazine, which is free online and available for purchase in print, is published three times a year. An international Roundtable follows each issue, allowing readers and authors to deepen the conversation together. Room also holds a poetry salon for donators, an annual gala, and a bi-weekly podcast featuring Room contributors. The PEN World Voices Festival showcased Room as an “indie lit mag” that “honors the art of the possible and the power of storytelling to push boundaries, challenge inherent narratives, and give voice to hope.”

Room was conceived by a small group of psychoanalysts from IPTAR in the wake of the 2016 US election to be a local newsletter. Resonating with a larger community need, the magazine has now been read in over 160 countries and has been downloaded over 60,000 times. Since establishing itself as an independent 501(c)(3) this year, a growing group of analytic institutes and art institutions are partnering with Room to help facilitate the platform’s social mission. Room is a participatory community project entirely dependent upon the donations, submissions, and enthusiasm of its worldwide analytic readers.
